as name suggest , this is hotline for citisens to call in when household problems arise . simple ! home safety hotline provide pest removal services , and have experience with many hazards , from mice to cockroaches to frozen pipes .
is there more to this ?
yes ! below surface , home safety hotline deal with more paranormal circumstances . hobbs and dwarves and trolls , sprites and wisps and gnomes . many things that average person in this world see as just silly old story .
but these all very real , and much more as well ... most of which pose real risk to humans , whether direct or indirect . home safety hotline is here to help !
with one important catch .
operators of this hotline do not have permissions to share broad strokes information with callers . will never say " ma'am , this is common hobb " , let alone explain dangers of hobb which transform into boggart - will simply give advice to please leave out fresh milk each night .
and this is where things start to unravel ... this vague advice prompt some people to roll eyes and ignore , or to demand something else - things which can only ever worsen problems .
so who is this about ?
as would turn out , carol - who is current supervisor - is faerie indeed . suddenly start to make sense why answers have to be so vague , and why solutions often seem incomplete . there is secret at play here : faeries look out for faeries .

faeries simply can not have that , no - humans would happily take away , to study and to learn , at any costs . would teach each other how to not only ward off faeries , but to starve and kill .
as of right now , human authorities generally trust home safety hotline with various " unexplainable " cases , things which do not find in medical textbooks or which go beyond police investigation , but that balance is delicate .
so why unemployment ?
anyone in employ of home safety hotline is inherently great danger to organisation , as these people hold truth at fingertips . these employees must be humans ignorant to true nature - willfully or not - or else other faeries who can live among humans fairly well already .
regardless of humanity , people who consistently get things wrong , or who learn about and object to true nature , can not let world know truth .
if home safety hotline gain reputation for consistent wrongs , for people that seek out other means of help and get out into public with this , there will be more and more investigation by human authority .
as such , carol have tendency to transform former employees , those who can not trust with faerie truths , into mice .

this means operators must strike balance : tell callers just enough to satisfy , whatever little nuggets might prolong life , but not so much to reveal truths of this world .
because , well ... most people who call , already have dooms set in stone . some of these people will die regardless of right answers , get stuck with permanent agony , or just plain lose grip on world . several callers already lose children , husbands , or very self to faeries .
