now for mild annoyance over posts online .

when find confirmation that pines family is jewish , did also find confirmation that parents raise dipper and mabel unreligious . which , sure , OK - but how people react to this … like , oh yay no one can #callout for dipper and mabel christmas fanart !
...

...
do people think christmas come from nowhere ? do people think that any holiday other than christian holidays is some ultra religious , never could be secular , event ?
scratch that because know answer is yes but just can not compute how that work in minds of these people , while treat christmas as entirely religion neutral .

not to mention , more to judaism than holidays - such that even if raise dipper and mabel unreligious , if never even touch jewish holidays ... values ! values systems , and life lessons , things that would still colour how parents choose to raise and teach , and just ! augh ! even if grow up and continue to not explore or observe any religion , still more than just holidays .

not jewish , but want to fight on this hill . like if nothing else , at least do not use " unreligious " as gleeful reason to wipe over with christianity .

I am thinking about how I live in a country that claims to not have any official religion - and yet christmas and good friday are national public holidays. You are correct to want to fight on this hill, I think.

To me it's the idea that someone who isn't celebrating Christmas is somehow missing out. Like, yeah in a sense you kind of are, in that here is this mass cultural thing going on that you are not participating in. But like. Nor is celebrating Christmas an essential nutrient that your body will decay without, y'know? There is a different calendar and set of holidays to care about.

Such is the nature of Christian hegemony though, that people entirely cannot imagine what a life or holiday culture outside of that would look like.

(Also, man, how little do you value this aspect of a character if you saw it mostly as an obstacle to getting to draw them the way you wanted?)

Yeah, for real. And I get that those explorations are often better done at the hands of Jewish fic authors, who already have familiarity and don't have to learn the principles of the religion from scratch. But yknow, some curiosity on the matter would be nice amidst the defaulting.

Have you read much Jewish fantasy? There are three books I know of that I'm quite fond of.

Yeah, we have a Christian here but don’t celebrate Christmas, but it’s so inescapable! And if you are prone to Xmas blues, suddenly having everything closed and everyone gone for the holiday makes it worse! (Especially since Christmas is one of those things where if you lack “the Christmas spirit,” the only solution is MORE CHRISTMAS.)
