one ability which might miss here is reblog - or rechost , if so prefer . nothing is quite like that here , but these ideas might help .

1. copy-paste and host on personal journal .
but whoa there , stop and hold on ! yeah , do not do this without clear and explicit permission . if something is behind access filter , then journal owner want this to stay there , clearly .
worth mention this is also not necessarily common behaviour - tend to be exception , not norm .
but say permission acquire , OK .
this will be of course , any other normal entry on page . will show on reading pages unless explicitly turn off , have ability to tag to personal conventions , so on and so forth .
there is side effect that this content will not disappear even if original journal owner do - that might be nice if some tragic digital accident wipe account , but become thorn in side if actually want to delete .

so is there another way ? well .

2. make entry with link to original post .
again , if something is behind access filter , then journal owner want this to stay there - but at least in this case , post would still be behind lock . still , probably ask to do this if post is not already in public eye .
one benefit is this give more opportunity to contribute thoughts and comments as part of share - after all , want people to click link , right ? so should probably explain why like so much !
again , this have same benefits of any other normal journal entry .

and something else , too :

3. memories .
memories feature is nice . there is more limit on tags here , so probably will not have full hierarchy . these also will not show up in reading pages of followers .
however , these might be easier to browse , as will almost certainly have shorter list of tags than full journal . and while memory tags have certain limits , titles can contain information too .

unfortunately there is no way to directly give long form comments on memories , but this lead nicely into ...

4. combination strategy !
memories do not just apply to posts from other journals . can choose to make memories from personal posts , and as well from posts that generate in RSS feed accounts .
( important caveat : RSS feed posts will eventually expire - so this choice is not great for longevity , but might work if expect will only need memory temporarily , such as event announcement from off-site . hat tip to [personal profile] tropicsbear ! )

that in mind , might choose to share video or article link as regular journal post , with unique tag like " gallery " so people can easily view - or even split into hierarchy to get more specific .
but if that piece really stand out , and want people to definitely see this , could choose to put post in memories . this way , someone would not need to go through whole tag list to find correct tag , and then look through tag to find that specific piece .
memories can be smaller , more specific list of curations , in essence !

none of this is really perfect standin replacement , but , hope these things might help . :)

These are generally good observations.

>>1. copy-paste and host on personal journal .<<

This is not something people typically do on Dreamwidth. However:

>> stop and hold on ! yeah , do not do this without clear and explicit permission . <<

Some posts say "please forward widely" or otherwise indicate that this is something folks are welcome to reblog and/or link to. For example, I have 3 recurring posts in my Wednesday rotation (Good News, Hard Things, and Cuddle Party), and the Recurring Posts entry says that folks can copy those. So for chosters who miss the reblogging option, watch for things like that where people state that reblogging a piece is okay.

Hmm, maybe a Reblogging tag and interest would be helpful. That way, people who are into it -- and that's likely to be a lot of Tumblr users as well as chosters -- could easily find each other and rebloggable material to share.

Alternatively, you could regularly post a list of links labeled "Things I Would Totally Reblog If Reblogging Worked on Dreamwidth." And then you make that link list rebloggable with a permission statement at the end of it! \o/ You'd still have to do your reblogging manually on Dreamwidth, but it could be done among consenting users.

>>2. make entry with link to original post .<<

This is common and popular on Dreamwidth.

Locked posts can be linked but not opened unless you have access. This is why I try to avoid subscribing to "friends only" or "friends mostly" blogs: I can't see the tiny lock dingbat easily, which leads to me linking things that are locks, which just annoys everyone.

>>3. memories .<<

This is often the best way to save things from someone else's blog. It is advisable to use Wayback, Ghost, or another archive in case a blog gets deleted later.

>>4. combination strategy !<<

Good idea.

Here's another tool: invitations and crossposting. If you want to spread material, especially if you run a community or you know of a community that welcomes that kind of content, you can just ask the original author to crosspost their piece there. It's not exactly the same method as reblogging, but it achieves the same end result of duplicating content on multiple pages.

Would you like to post your above discussion of reblogging workarounds over on [community profile] newcomers? There are a bunch of Cohost refugees there who are probably missing that feature.

I have an entry about crossposting.

This is the FAQ page about crossposting. It does look like Dreamwidth only crossposts automatically to other sites. However, if you had another site configured to crosspost automatically to Dreamwidth, you could point that to a different place than your personal blog, like a community that you run.

Crossposting on Dreamwidth is usually done manually. You make a post. Then you open a new post window, direct it to a different blog or community, and copy-paste the title and content. You may need to use different tags. Frex, I always crosspost my Birdfeeding posts to my personal blog and to [community profile] birdfeeding if you want some to compare.
