though most people in universe believe greymarch to be simple myth , yngvar the wanderer explore lands far and wide , with examination of all observable ruins . yngvar notice that these ruins fall into exactly thousand-year periods - set aside cylarne , which was several thousand years older . this could suggest history of at least 9000 years , which not even people of nirn seem to record quite that far yet .
even more , ebrocca was very newest of these ruins - and almost exactly 1000 years old . this is where yngvar the wanderer turn to yngvar doom-sayer : certain that another thousand-year cycle was about to close , that everything and everyone present now would become just another tale of history , yngvar begin to spread news of this fate . many people did not believe , and yet … yngvar was actually right .

time is different in shivering isles than on nirn . haskill can say as much , whether slip away for cyrodiilic quest or simply ask about effects of time . in this way , what is 1000 years in shivering isles could take up far less time comparatively on nirn - in fact , this is almost certain . timescale is fluid and inconsistent , sometimes operate slower , sometimes faster , very hours and minutes variable in definition . not to mention strange little pockets of time - afternoon can seem to last for fortnight , and fortnight for mere afternoon .
but time will always march on , time is inevitable - even as much as time is fluid , and as much as sheogorath hold influence over time of shivering isles , time will never stop . and with time will eventually come jyggalag , this herald of new era who raze and kill everything in path , total conquest to reclaim for order , mathematical perfection , formula of everything that ever was and ever will be - without free thought , without personality , without colour . yet in time , sheogorath would reawaken , return , and undo once more .

what trap jyggalag in this cycle - reality , or perception that this is reality ?
jyggalag first make march right to throne room , though sometimes this is harder to find than others - after all , capital of shivering isles move around from era to era , due to sheogorath's forgetfulness after return . in this path , jyggalag have only concern to claim that throne , and only destroy or kill that which directly interfere . residents of shivering isles who offer up information and loyalty will marginally prolong life - but even without help , jyggalag will always find way .
once jyggalag secure throne , very lands start to wither and decay , as formulaic order overtake natural madness . those who should no longer be alive under rules of logical time will meet sudden death , while knights tend to kill anyone else left alive regardless of loyalty . structures crumble under this duress , while jyggalag start to build anew in image of perfect order . mazken and aureal alike retreat , and even haskill seem to retreat somewhere unknown .

for time , all is well by jyggalag's standards of well . but eventually , things to start slip through cracks . where did that little flower come from , who would dare to paint such nonsensical images here , what is this horrible feeling ?
over time , jyggalag will taste madness , this blatant contradiction crawl under metaphorical skin , start to break mind apart - and soon jyggalag will cease existence once again , left to stagnate in unknowable void for unknowable amount of time .
this is when sheogorath reawaken , to mourn losses and pick up from total devastation , rebuild structures , ecosystems , populations . there is no specific time as to when this happen , as unlike jyggalag , sheogorath is unpredictable - though usually only able to return after all destruction is said and done . once , was able to interrupt jyggalag's destruction outright and protect handful of survivors , but this never did happen again .

greymarch is as much curse on sheogorath as on curse on jyggalag .
what happen during shivering isles DLC of oblivion , kossai settle to consider this end of 12th era , and thaliendir as mantle bring in 13th - hence , thaliendir is 13th shivering-era sheogorath . various sheogoraths through these eras try various methods to stop greymarch , but all meet with failure .
3rd era sheogorath try to befriend , so sweetly and naively leave notes , colourful decorations of love and peace . jyggalag feel this to be grave insult , and refuse to dignify with answer .
7th era sheogorath try to ignore , entirely refuse , in hopes that jyggalag too would ignore , refuse , and simply never show up . 7th was then quickest to succumb , and jyggalag destroy even more thoroughly than usual as there was no preparation .
9th era sheogorath try to contain self in bondage and sensory deprivation - if sheogorath was bound , jyggalag would be bound upon appearance , no ? unfortunately , jyggalag is quite big , heavy , and strong , more metallic than organic , and this wind up useless .

regardless , this 12th era plan is why shivering isles did not undergo total destruction - worst of destruction only happen if jyggalag is able to take throne away from sheogorath , and for once , that did not happen . thaliendir was able to recover most of what did happen , with minimal deaths , negotiate new plans for defenses , and set things right again .

residents who did die , or possibly die , during this greymarch include :
duke thadon , guarantee during quests ( thaliendir replace )
duchess syl , guarantee during quests ( defector to forces of order )
felas sarandas , guarantee during quests ( defector to forces of order )
ma'zaddha , guarantee during quests ( traitor to duchess syl )
muurine , guarantee during quests ( traitor to duchess syl )
big head , unfortunate impulses ( fork theft )
nelrene , unknown ( disappear after related quest , and daedra can not truly die ; traitor to duchess syl )
dredhwen , unknown ( due to in-game bug , dredhwen is no longer present anywhere in shivering isles . perhaps dredhwen just find somewhere hidden to nap , or perhaps dead after all . )
