in answer to public question from tumblr :
The grey March happens at the end of every era supposedly. Eras aren’t uniform in TES. Why does it work like that

even worse
- not necessarily any correspondence with tamrielic eras at all ! yngvar doom-sayer write book which speculatively date these greymarches to every thousand years , while minor comments on part of haskill imply time in shivering isles is different from tamrielic time .
( this video showcase in-game quote : "time is a strange thing in the isles, so this may not set us back[...]" and later loremaster archive say : "Let me be clear: inhabitants of the Shivering Isles are affected by Time, but we are not subject to it. We are subjects of Lord Sheogorath, who subjects us to whatever subjects he is in the mood to subjudicate. Because Time is subjective." )

in this case , time might stretch , squish , and warp at any rate sheogorath will , such that every thousand years of time in shivering isles is completely inconsistent and patternless in relation to tamrielic time - this one just happen to coincide with major historical event that would bring end of era .

as for why greymarch is so consistent ... perhaps there is no special reason for thousand years - could be five hundred , could be five thousand . important part is that this is cyclical , something predictable and consistent , because - as far as sheogorath say - jyggalag and minions can not really be unpredictable , there is no situation in which jyggalag will simply walk away and make another choice . for as long as sheogorath and jyggalag bound , this curse not only jyggalag with eternal struggle , but sheogorath as well , always aware there will be another greymarch to wipe out all life and - in some way - destroy both selves .

so , yeah , certainly not all planes of oblivion would have marriage or equivalent . but shivering isles is pretty fun one to think about .

in shivering isles , yes , someone could marry oneself - something which even 4e sheogorath personally would do ! perhaps all sheogoraths renew this vow every era ? in kossai version of things , sheogorath is plural and effectively autoromantic , so might be onto something here .
one could also marry objects - if only big head was still alive to marry fork of horripilation , surely would . ( unfortunately , yes , thaliendir's big head is dead . )

and one fun little thought which have : someone could marry as many spouses as able to fit pieces of wedding jewellery on body . perhaps this is just one of those misconceptions , people from outside isles who hear and spread strange stories ... but maybe there is some truth !

in all honesty , probably not too much legal benefit to marriage , and certainly would not get legal recognition outside isles - but actual wedding celebrations ? well , any celebration is another chance to indulge in madness . rumour even tell of one prospective bride who attempt to individually marry every individual grain of sand in hourglass , so that celebration could stretch on forever ...

there is change and fluidity in every daedric prince , but none make this more clear than sheogorath - with madness as sphere , of course would be unpredictable and uncontrollable . right ?
between different games and lore books within those games , indeed sheogorath can be very different . daggerfall is extremely unstable , morrowind is complete inverse . base game oblivion quest is funny and random , but see serious side in shivering isles . and skyrim is ... skyrim ... yeah ...

point is , all of these equally sheogorath . dramatic changes , for sure ! so why and how ?
well ... hopefully simple enough , these various traits exist on scales . clarity of thought and memory , clarity of words and expressions . emotional control , impulse control , judgment and sense of logic . so on , and so forth . even in stability , sheogorath is unstable - that is nature . not just of madness - as sheogorath is sort of proto-madness from which all madness stem , and thus must encapsulate and express all - but also of daedric fluidity .

shivering isles was similarly unstable for quite some time . as very moods and expressions shift , so would entire realm - landmasses would break apart , shift , take new shapes , waters would rise and fall , flora , fungi , and fauna would mutate and evolve and go extinct . this was not ideal for anyone , most especially sheogorath .
after first true greymarch , lands corrupt by jyggalag , realm adapt under duress - half of realm exist in bright , and half in dark , as sheogorath oscillate too wildly for things to shift . things would remain this way , even in greymarches after , as sheogorath come to quite enjoy . people would come to know bright half as mania , and dark half as dementia , both equally alive and full of feeling .

in mania one can find colour , joy and laughter , drugs beyond compare . these very hills exist to inspire artistry and hope , whether waters flow up or down .
of course , mania can also be dangerous : creature inhabitants can be snappish , or not always understand consequences to actions . in most dangerous of times , one can attract attention of megafungi , to almost always fatal results .

in dementia one can find most dreary of sights , depths of despair , darkness which seem to never end . dementia is place to mourn , place which can look back at those awful horrendous feelings and understand .
dementia have reputation for danger , especially as creature inhabitants can be quite territorial - many grave sites here , for one - but not all is for worse . there can be spots of comfortable silence in dementia , which mania do not really know how to give .

as shivering isles find people inhabit again , people often feel more drawn to one side than other - and between people of either side , there can be overlap in madnesses , traits , and expressions .
some people would then try to put these into equivalent categories . but that is counterproductive - many madnesses do not have one single home , but depend on individual at hand . delusions and hallucinations vary in subjects and presentations , for example - delusion of grandeur is quite different from delusion of undeath . likewise , violences come from many different kinds of roots , not all of which can even call madness .

with all this in mind , mania and dementia can vaguely describe these feelings and madnesses , and in some cases - like that of sheogorath , and later haskill - this can be helpful , but there is no hard and fast rule which is which . where someone belong is down to inner feelings , which land draw attention and fill needs . some people will move between both , look for lands between , or simply settle even if not quite right .

for defense , shivering isles have both gatekeeper and xedilian - but " both " sort of mislead , because really only use one or other at any given time . if gatekeeper is alive then xedilian see no use , and if xedilian is in use then gatekeeper is dead .

this is because gatekeeper is on fringe , while xedilian is further inland . fringe in self is sort of defensive measure - people who inhabit fringe can not move further into isles until have sufficient blessing of madness , but possibly can assume that before gatekeeper there was no good way to enforce this .
even so , gatekeeper seem to have only one method of enforcement : kill . not always what need ! less sophistication than xedilian , too - xedilian can kill , but will not always , as kiliban get to personally make judgment calls on who might or might not be good fit . gatekeeper either do not have that level of awareness , or just see no reason to care .

in main quest , player first face down and kill gatekeeper - necessary to get in , even for those with blessing , as relmyna put keys inside body . so , with gatekeeper dead , sheogorath ask player to help kiliban with xedilian , fix up and run again . and sure , for that short time after , shivering isles rely on xedilian .
but then sheogorath ask player to make another gatekeeper , work together with relmyna . and , well ... can imagine that would again put xedilian out of use ! kiliban would be in terrible shape again .

so , propose : thaliendir , after first mantle , would negotiate with relmyna and kiliban . relmyna treasure these gatekeepers like children , and after thaliendir prove good enough adventurers can indeed kill gatekeeper , might be more ... hesitant . especially if that overall threat level is low - to let child die for nothing ? well what kind of mother would relmyna be then ?
and kiliban need something to keep in world , something more than just wander and dream . need to be able to maintain xedilian and do something that feel useful and substantial .

so then ... why not allow xedilian to be main line of defense , and only bring out gatekeeper when threats too much for xedilian alone to handle ? relmyna get to enjoy time and safety with gatekeeper , and kiliban get to keep xedilian up just like want .

figure shivering isles , as represent sheogorath's mind , would change to reflect whoever take current title . so …
  • gnarls generally passive and stay away from people , unless those people attack . then , all near gnarls will become hostile . dementia gnarls often solitary , but mania gnarls come in groups . in either side , can sometimes see gnarls perform rituals at chosen trees .
  • mania grummites safe only from distance - while these grummites mean no harm , just can not understand limits and pain of other creatures - will approach at random and play . dementia grummites live solitary , like gnarls , and will not approach like mania grummites do . when attack , these grummites will not defend selves or even run - just cry out until dead .
  • baliwog passive unless attack , in both mania and dementia .
  • scalon can be hostile , but usually only near territory in water , or if attack first - otherwise passive . but , if traveller attack grummite or baliwog and scalon is near , scalon will defend .
  • elytra will also attack travellers in territory , and will defend solitary gnarls if near when traveller attack . often appear in at least pairs , in both mania and dementia .
  • undead and daedric creatures do not behave different , for those who go far enough to see .
  • thaliendir replace duchy with dolls , and entrust wide-eye and kithlan to understand what these dolls want . mania's doll get reputation as obsessive artist who will not stop even to sleep , and dementia's as depressive hermit who escape with near constant meditation and sleep . whether or not these dolls even alive and animate is debate that very few can answer for certain .
